FROM SEED TO SHELF

Mount Carmel is an established agricultural business that has been supplying products to the retail industry for over 30 years. The Company is a producer and packer of fresh produce. The farm is situated about 50 km outside of Johannesburg, in Bapsfontein.

The Company’s operations include large scale farming of salads and vegetables using conventional farming techniques as well as hydroponics and processing, packing and distribution.

The Business currently produces about 46 different crops, which it converts to approximately 180 different lines of finished product.

The Company has full control over the production process, i.e. from procuring the seeds from seed companies, to preparing and germinating the seeds in the on-site nurseries (can plant about 150,000 – 175,000 seeds per day), planting and growing crops in the fields, tunnels and greenhouses, harvesting and then agro-processing in the packing house, with delivery of the final product to the customers. In this way, the business is able to maintain the high quality standards of products required by its customers, and does not have to rely on the many value chain participants and middlemen that are common in the agriculture sector.
